It is a relief. Reported missing after the earthquakes that shook south-eastern Turkey and northern Syria on Monday February 6, Ghanaian international Christian Atsu, a former Chelsea and Newcastle player, was found alive under the rubble, a announced on a Turkish radio, Tuesday, February 7, Mustafa Ozat, Spokesperson of the Hatayspor club where the player plays: “Christian Atsu was released [des décombres] hurt. Our sporting director, Taner Savut, is unfortunately still under the rubble. Hatay was deeply affected. We are heading towards the end of the most dangerous hours.” Information confirmed by the Ghana Football Federation on its Twitter account. “We have received good news that Christian Atsu has been rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building and is receiving treatment.”
Aged 31, Christian Atsu has 65 caps with the Ghana team. On Sunday, he was the author of the winning goal, in added time, for his team against that of Kasimpasa SK (1-0), and shared his joy on his Twitter account. It was a few hours before the terrible earthquake.
On Instagram, Hatayspor coach Volkan Demirel expressed his concern about this tragedy on Monday. “Help… I ask you to send all the resources you have, it is not only Hatay and Antakya. I beg you, I ask you. Please, please , for God’s sake! People are dying here…”
A second division goalkeeper among the victims
According to the latest figures, the human toll now stands at more than 7,300 dead. Among that tally is Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan, the goalkeeper for Yeni Malatyaspor, a Turkish second division club north of Gaziantep. The death of the 28-year-old footballer was announced by his club, on Twitter: “Our goalkeeper, Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan, lost his life under the rubble of the earthquake. Rest in peace. We will not forget you.”
Ahmet Eyup Turkaslan has played 94 games in his professional career which began in 2014, including four in the Turkish first division with Ankaraspor and his last club Yeni Malatyaspor.
