50 years after the murder of eleven Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics on September 5, 1972, Germany will compensate the families of the victims and close a painful chapter in its history.
On September 5 and 6, 1972, eleven Israeli athletes lost their lives in an attack perpetrated by the Palestinian commando “Black September”. 50 years after the tragedy, the families of the victims will finally obtain compensation. “Germany offered 28 million euros, they had offered ten until then” reports Agnès Vahramian from Jerusalem. The families of the victims have threatened not to go to the commemorations scheduled for Monday, September 5 following this first proposal.
Beyond the money, the families got what they want, namely a commission of inquiry to shed light on the facts and the failings of Germany. “By contrast, no public apologies from Germany for what the families say are mistakes and lies”, complete Agnes Vahramian. For his part, the Israeli president played the card of diplomacy by expressing his gratitude to Berlin.
