Two stadiums, two atmospheres, for this fifth day of the Women’s World Cup. Auckland’s Eden Park has long been synonymous with frustration for Italy, finally falling to an eye-catching Argentinian formation on Monday 24 July. For Germany, the case was much easier against Morocco, whose baptism in the World Cup turned into a nightmare.

Group G masters of suspense

If you want sharp scenarios, Group G takes care of everything in this World Cup. After Sweden won on a whim in the 90th minute on Sunday, Italy won… with a whim in the 87th minute on Monday. The Nazionale broke the Argentinian lock thanks to Cristiana Girelli, who entered the game in the 83rd minute, and the only scorer against Argentina (1-0) at Eden Park in Auckland. One more proof of the growing density of the competition, where many favorite teams struggled during this first day, like the France team against Jamaica. After successes in the last moments, never two without three? Italy and Sweden, leaders of group G, will face each other on Saturday (9:30 a.m., on France 2 and France.tv).

Reynald Pedros’ Morocco gets a lesson from Germany

After the good run of their male counterparts in Qatar a few months ago, the Moroccans experienced a painful discovery of the World Cup. Faced with the vice-champion of Europe and double winner of the World Cup, the Lionesses of the Atlas saw what was the very high international level. The selection led by Frenchman Reynald Pedros, the only tricolor technician in the running with Hervé Renard at the head of Les Bleues, was outclassed by Germany (6-0) in Melbourne.

First selection of the Maghreb qualified for the competition, Morocco was voluntary offensively, but far too permissive in defense, especially against Alexandra Popp, author of a double (11th and 39th). In the second period, Hanane Ait El Haj and Yasmin Mirabet scored against their side, adding a little more to the bill. The Germans won the biggest victory of this start of the World Cup, and did better than Japan against Zambia on Saturday.
