The European Union should have ratified, Tuesday, March 7, the ban on the sale of cars with thermal engines from 2035. Germany finally decided not to vote on the text. The country defends the use of synthetic fuels, developed locally.
In Germany, country of Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW or Audi, there is no longer any question of supporting the end of thermal engines in Europe. An agreement had been reached in Brussels (Belgium), and the European Parliament had voted to ban them from 2035 on the sale of new vehicles, petrol or diesel. At the last minute, the German government gave up. “You need freedom of technology choice. The decision on engines is a question for customers, for manufacturers, and not for politicians”believes Christian Lindner, German Minister of Finance.
Blackmail from Germany?
The last vote of the Member States, necessary to ratify the text, is postponed to an indefinite date. The transition to 100% electric is therefore no longer recorded. Environmentalists shared their anger. “It is unacceptable that any State (…) can go back on the word it has given, and by going back on it begins to create blackmail”, comments Pascal Canfin, MEP for the Renew group. Berlin is indeed demanding an exemption for new synthetic fuels developed in Germany.
