Germany condemns “escalation of violent demonstrations” against UNRWA in East Jerusalem

Germany condemned Friday May 10 “the escalation of violent demonstrations” against Unrwa in East Jerusalem, calling on Israel to “ensure protection” of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees after the attempted burning of its offices by Israeli demonstrators on Thursday.

“We condemn the escalation of violent protests against UNRWA in East Jerusalem. Israel must ensure the protection of UN facilities and personnel in the occupied Palestinian territories”declared the German Foreign Ministry on the social network X.

Thursday evening, “Israelis twice set fire to the perimeter of UNRWA HQ in occupied East Jerusalem”and this while “personnel from UNRWA and other UN agencies were present” inside, said Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugeesspecifying that no “No UN staff member was injured”.

“In recent months, UN staff have been regularly subjected to harassment and intimidation. Our compound has been severely vandalized and damaged. On several occasions, Israeli extremists have threatened our staff with weapons.”he said Thursday evening.
