Germany has classified France and Denmark as areas of infections with “high risk”. The German Institute for Public Health Surveillance announced on Friday, December 17, that it would now impose a period of quarantine on unvaccinated travelers from these countries.
From Sunday, this measure, which will also apply to travelers from Norway, Lebanon and Andorra, implies that people who have not been vaccinated or who have not already been infected with Covid-19, observe a quarantine with a possible test on the fifth day.
The announcement comes as French Prime Minister Jean Castex has said the Omicron variant should “become dominant from the start of 2022” in France, announcing a series of measures and restrictions.
Germany, already affected by a significant rebound in coronavirus contaminations, must prepare for a new “massive wave” linked to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, had previously warned the Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach. Denmark announced Friday the closure of a huge part of its cultural scene and a new restriction on nightlife in an attempt to curb the record surge in cases of Covid-19 and the new variant Omicron.
Denmark on Friday recorded a new all-time high with more than 11,000 cases in 24 hours, including a new high of more than 2,500 cases of the Omicron variant, according to the government.
In France, the Omicron variant “will spread very quickly to the point of becoming dominant from the start of 2022”, estimated Friday the Prime Minister, Jean Castex.
