“The security situation in the region is very volatile”assured, Wednesday January 3, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, calling on German nationals to leave this country “by the most rapid means”. “A further aggravation of the situation and an extension of the conflict cannot be ruled out, particularly after the assassination of the vice-president of the Hamas political bureau, Saleh al-Arouri, in the Beirut region on January 2, 2024. This is true in particularly for the southern parts of Lebanon, up to and including the urban areas of southern Beirut”writes the ministry on its website.
This warning was formulated after a meeting on Wednesday of the German government’s crisis unit. Saleh al-Arouri and six other Hamas officials and executives were killed in a strike attributed to Israel which targeted the offices of the Islamist movement on Tuesday evening in the stronghold of the powerful pro-Iranian Hezbollah. Germany had already issued a warning against travel to Lebanon in October, following the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas.
