Germany | Another day of strike at Lufthansa planned for Tuesday

(Berlin) Another day of strike by ground employees of Germany’s Lufthansa airline is planned for Tuesday at seven airports across the country. This pressure tactic follows a similar walkout earlier this month.

In a statement on Sunday, the Verdi union said the February 20 strike will affect Frankfurt and Munich airports, Lufthansa’s two main embarkation and disembarkation points, as well as Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne-Bonn and Stuttgart. . This day of walkout will take place from 4 a.m. Tuesday until 7:10 a.m. the next morning.

So far, a 27-hour strike at five of the same airports on February 7 has prompted the airline to cancel hundreds of flights.

The union is demanding wage increases of 12.5%, or at least 500 euros ($726 CAD) more per month, in negotiations for about 25,000 employees, including check-in staff, handling staff, maintenance and freight.

These “warning strikes” lasting several hours or a day are a common tactic in German contract negotiations.

A series of talks that began on February 12 resulted in no agreement.

A return to the negotiating table is planned for Wednesday.
