Even in the absence of its star player Alexia Putellas, Spain started its Euro perfectly on Friday July 8. On the lawn of Stadium MK, 80 km north-west of London, the Spaniards clearly won against the Finns (4-1). The latter had yet opened the scoring from the first minute through Linda Sällström.

But the Spaniards, who are among the favorites despite the absence of their top scorer Jennifer Hermoso and the 2021 Ballon d’Or Alexia Putellas, seriously injured in the left knee, managed to resume the match on their own.

First thanks to a headed goal from their captain Irene Paredes on a corner (26th), then by two other headers (Aitana Bonmati in the 41st, and Lucia Garcia in the 75th). Mariona Caldentey added to the penalty kick at the very end of the match (90+5). The Spanish selection remains on an impressive series of 24 games without defeat.

In the second match of group B, the Germans largely beat the Danes (4-0), finalists of the last edition of the Euro. From the start of the match, the players of Martina Voss-Tecklenburg took the lead, hitting the posts three times before Lina Magull found the net (20th). Upon returning from the locker room, Lea Schüller sheltered her teammates (56th).

Despite a large domination, the Germans took off only in the middle of the second period (goals from Lena Lattwein at the 78th andAlexandra Popp at the 86th), the Danes cracking under the pressure inflicted by their opponents. Already crowned eight times in the history of the competition, Germany took the lead of their group thanks to goal difference.
