A subscription revolutionizes public transport in Germany: for only 49 euros per month, it allows unlimited use of all trains, buses, trams and metros… This formula has met with immense success.

A public transport subscription valid on all German regional and local lines, for 49 euros per month: the Deutschland-Ticket works in regional trains, trains, trams and buses unlimited. Since its launch at the beginning of May, two thirds of users in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) have abandoned their regional card in favor of the Deutschland-Ticket.

A state-supported subscription

The German State has supported this subscription, to promote less polluting transport. The operation is a real success with the public, even if it is not profitable for the transport companies. The state has promised to compensate for the losses, estimated at 3 billion euros in 2023. “The State and the region fully compensate for this deficit by each taking on 50% of the costs. In the end, we do not lose money, but we do not gain anything either with this new subscription”summarizes Thilo Ganter, regional transport manager for Freiburg im Breisgau.
