German police shoot dead knife-wielding man, days after deadly Solingen attack

Germany is on high alert after three people were killed and eight injured in a knife attack in Solingen on Friday.

The events come a few days after a deadly knife attack in Solingen (Germany). In Moers (Germany), not far from Solingen, a man suspected of attacking passers-by with knives was shot dead on Tuesday, August 27, German police reported.

Emergency services were called at around 2.45pm on Tuesday to reports that a man had “attacked and threatened several passers-by” in Moers, Duisburg police said in a statement. Officers were able to locate a 26-year-old German suspect, who “attacked them with two knives in his hands”police said. Police shot the man, who was “mortally wounded”but no other people were injured.

The incident comes at a time when Germany is on high alert after three people were killed and eight injured in a knife attack at a street festival in Solingen on Friday. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the operation. The main suspect, a 26-year-old Syrian man, surrendered to authorities and confessed to the facts, local police announced Sunday morning. On Monday, Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged to tighten German gun laws, “especially with regard to the use of knives”.
