German tennis player Alexander Zverev will be tried from May 31 for alleged domestic violence against a former partner, the Berlin district court announced on Monday, January 15. Currently competing at the Australian Open, the 26-year-old contested a criminal order which imposed a fine of 450,000 euros on him in October for “assault”.
Alexander Zverev, 6th in the world, is accused of having “physically mistreated a woman during an argument and harmed her health” in May 2020 in Berlin, according to the court. The player proclaims his innocence and rejects these accusations since the start of this procedure in July 2023. According to his defense, the facts described by his ex-partner “have already been rejected by a medical report”.
In January 2023, the ATP, which manages the international men’s tennis circuit, closed another investigation into allegations of domestic violence against the player. These came from a tennis player, Olga Sharypova, but remained unanswered due to lack of sufficient evidence.
