The President of the Republicans of the Senate, Gérard Larcher, invited Tuesday January 23 on franceinfo, does not want the right to voluntary termination of pregnancy to be included in the Constitution. “No, because I do not think that abortion is threatened in our country”, he justified. The examination of the bill which should lead to the inclusion of abortion in the registration will begin on Wednesday.

He specifies that, for him, “the Constitution is not a catalog of social and societal rights” and that‘”there are already a certain number of decisions from the Constitutional Council” which guarantee abortion. “If abortion were threatened, believe me, I would fight for it to be maintained.”

Gérard Larcher denounces the closure of 130 IVG centers in 10 years

“I have always been very favorable to abortion and the first of my concerns is the conditions in which we practice voluntary termination of pregnancy”affirmed the President of the Senate. “We have closed, in more than ten years, 130 centers which were dedicated to this”. For him, on abortion, “the first issue is the very bad response we give to these women who, at one point, make the choice” of abortion, and who “has also led to longer deadlines”.

Gérard Larcher also justifies his position by respecting a “principle of the Veil law, in particular on the time limits for abortion: it is first the rights of women which are preserved, and then, after a certain period, it is the rights of the child and the right of the unborn child. It is this balance that should not be upset.”
