Mayotte: Gérald Darmanin promises “the end of soil law” to fight against immigration
Mayotte: Gérald Darmanin promises “the end of soil law” to fight against immigration – (France 2)
Traveling to Mayotte on Sunday February 11, the Minister of the Interior assured that the government would put an end to land law in the department to fight against immigration. If the left is concerned, the far right supports the proposal, which will require a change to the Constitution.
As soon as the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, arrived in Mayotte, tension rose on Sunday February 11. Dozens of Mahorais demanded strong measures to address the crisis affecting the department. “The government must resolve the problem of insecurity and uncontrolled immigration”, estimates a man. The minister proposed a shock remedy, putting an end to land law. “It will no longer be possible to become French if you are not yourself the child of French parents. We will thus literally cut off the attractiveness that there may be in the Mahorais archipelago”did he declare.
The left is worried about an expansion of this ban
In Mayotte, children of foreign parents born in the territory become French at the age of 18 if they have lived at least five years there. The father or mother must have resided in France for at least three months at the time of the baby’s birth.
If the far right calls for the suppression of this right, the left is worried. “This exception will later become generalized in other territories. We will always find good reasons to say that we must stop with the law of the soil. And we will return to one of the great achievements of our Republic since its birth”, warns rebellious MP Éric Coquerel. This removal implies a change to the Constitution. The government will present emergency legislation before the summer.
