“Above all, I want to step up the fight against crime like never before” : this is Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin’s project for Paris in the coming years, with the Olympic Games in sight. He explained his roadmap to our colleagues fromParisian (paid item) this Wednesday, on the occasion of the arrival of Laurent Nunez at the head of the Paris police headquarters. The minister wants to fight in particular against “unbearable violence such as the theft of watches (…) delinquency in transport (…) the numerous attacks which primarily target women”.
It thus announces the creation of 500 police positions within two years and 1,000 positions within five years in Paris. The Paris police headquarters, which covers the capital and the inner suburbs, currently has 27,760 police officers. 500 new cameras will also be installed in Paris over the next few years.
A back-to-school drug action plan
The minister’s other objective is the fight against drug trafficking, in particular with the problem of crack users in the north of the capital. He says he asked the new prefect for an action plan for the start of the school year. The resolution of the problem “probably calls for greater solidarity between local authorities and the State. We have to stop passing the ball to each other, Parisians don’t want that”, says the minister
He also says he asked the Anti-Narcotics Office “to take up this problem energetically”.
Finally in terms of maintenance of order, particularly during demonstrations, Gérald Darmanin promises more training for police officers. With the creation of a training center in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges in the Val-de-Marne, an unprecedented structure.
