Georges Brassens was born 100 years ago. The city of Sète has decided to pay tribute to the poet and singer through an exhibition and various shows.

Georges Brassens’ songs have toured the world, but it is in Sète (Hérault), his home port, that they resonate the loudest. The city saw it born, 100 years ago to the day. The street of his birthplace today bears his name. Because here, the artist is part of the walls. “Every time he came to see his parents, we talked. You can’t forget him, a guy like that”, confides a neighbor. 40 years after his death, George Brassens still attracts crowds. The fans of the first hour like to come to collect themselves in the city. “It rocked all my youth. It’s a poetry… He’s a poet, someone generous, good”, confides an admirer.

If the future singer wrote his very first verses at the college of Sète, the school will however always take a back seat. For Brassens, it is above all friends first. The daughter of his childhood best friend, Jeanne Corporon, has retained some memories. “This is where they smoked the first cigarettes, in the cave”, she shows, photo in support. And if his mother sent him to Paris at the age of 18, Georges Brassens has never forgotten his anchor point. An exhibition is dedicated to him on a boat, moored in the port. There are the texts of the 200 songs he composed, or the replica of the Parisian cabaret where he made his debut.
