Briton George Russell (Mercedes) will start on Sunday in pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix, the 9th round of 24 of the Formula 1 season, after setting the best time in qualifying on Saturday at the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit in Montreal.
The Dutch three-time world champion, Max Verstappen (Red Bull), will start in second position with a time exactly similar to that of Russell. Briton Lando Norris (McLaren) took third place ahead of his Australian teammate Oscar Piastri. Max Verstappen’s teammate at Red Bull, Sergio Pérez, failed again in Q1 and will start 16th.
The two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr did little better, stopping in Q2. They will start in succession on the grid, in 11th and 12th places. On the French side, the two Alpines of Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, who will leave the French team at the end of the season, will start in 15th and 18th position respectively.
