“George Enesco”, Cristian Măcelaru | The duty

The Deutsche Grammophon which arrives with an original proposal, which is moreover symphonic, enriching the discographic repertoire, this is rare enough to have to be noted. Cristian Măcelaru, whom we know well here since he visited us as an assistant to Yannick Nézet-Séguin in Philadelphia, is responsible for the Orchester national de France until 2027 and will take over from Louis Langrée next September. Cincinnati. The music of Enesco (the Frenchization of the surname Enescu is a custom due to the fact that the composer was largely French by adoption) was mainly defended by Lawrence Foster, in Erato recordings around thirty years ago. The three symphonies, from 1905, 1904 and 1918, evolve in their own sphere but close to a Roussel, Scriabin and Strauss galaxy. In this new complete, engraved in Paris, Măcelaru removes thickness, pomp and excess heaviness from Enesco. It’s not very spectacular, but it’s fair, it has integrity and it solidly documents these compositions.
