geographer Magali Reghezza-Zitt expects a “state strategist”

The new Prime Minister is officially in charge of ecological planning. Elisabeth Borne gathered her government, alongside the head of state, for a first council of ministers, Monday, May 23. Eco guest of franceinfo, geographer Magali Reghezza-Zitt, member of the High Council for the Climate, is now waiting “a strategic state”.

The climate, she explains, must be present in all policies, because “it will affect our daily life, our housing, our purchasing power, agriculture, school, training“: “You need a strong pilot”she insists, “a conductor capable of centralizing”with a “strategic vision”.

The geographer gives the example of a central domain, the building, which is “a large emissions sector” greenhouse gases: “We know today that when we renovate the building, we will lower emissions, and at the same time we will adapt the building to the heat wave, to the drought. And then behind, we will be able to work on daily life in the house. We are going to do more diversity, take action on good housing, well-being, comfort”. Conversely, the specialist warns against what the IPCC calls “mal-adaptations”false good ideas to adapt our economies and our societies to the climate crisis.

We can’t settle for patches, we can’t settle for solutions that postpone the problem in time.

The case of “basins”, used in agriculture is, according to her, a good example. These water retention basins, requested in particular by the FNSEA, make it possible to irrigate crops in the event of drought: “You are going to build an infrastructure which will save a little time, but which will have a lot of emissions, which will have very negative impacts on biodiversity. However, we know today that if we do not protect the biodiversity, by boomerang effect, we will not only increase climate change, but also have big consequences for these same farmers.”
