Quebec Public Security Minister Geneviève Guilbault is asking the federal government to take action in the fight against firearms.
Ms. Guilbault pointed out Wednesday that the federal Department of Public Security was provided with two ministers during the last formation of the cabinet of Justin Trudeau.
In a press briefing preceding the Council of Ministers in Quebec, Ms. Guilbault asked Ottawa to be “an essential partner in the fight against this violence”.
“We all understand that there was an election, there are two ministers of public security who were also appointed at the federal level. I sent them a letter with Quebec’s demands, including a very clear one with regard to gun violence. I have made a meeting request and I am awaiting an answer. “
Ms. Guilbault pointed out that gun control begins with border management, which falls under federal jurisdiction. The Criminal Code and the penalties it contains also depend on the decisions of federal legislators.
As for handguns, Ms. Guilbault believes that the federal government must have a clear position.
“The famous issue of handguns, there had been a bill to give that to the towns and the towns were against it. U.S. too. They must once and for all take a stand against or be clear in order to ban handguns, with a clear position on this. “
The Minister highlighted the efforts of the Quebec government with Operation Centaur. She also indicated that the next economic update will provide funds for prevention initiatives.
On behalf of the government and on her own behalf, Ms. Guilbault offered her condolences to the family of Thomas Trudel, who died by gunshot Sunday in Montreal.
“Since Sunday evening we have all been torn and a little traumatized by this situation which has arisen. “
The minister says she understands the anguish this act arouses among neighbors and the general population due to the resurgence of violence in Montreal in recent weeks.
