With a card of 63 delivered the day before, Niemann made an eagle on the first hole on Friday and again delivered a card of 63.
Niemann went minus-16 (126 shots) after two days of action to smash the mark set by Cameron Young 20 minutes earlier. Young went 62 on Friday for a total of 128 shots heading into the weekend rounds.
The previous record of 130 shots was shared by four players, including Sam Burns, who pulled off the feat last year.
The mark to beat after 72 holes was set in 1985 by Lanny Wadkins who played minus-20 (264 strokes).
This edition of the tournament saw the entire top-10 in the world participate in addition to 19 of the top 25 golfers in the PGA rankings. They will not all participate in the rounds of the weekend, it is in particular the case of Dustin Johnson.
The five Canadians in contention will not take part in the weekend rounds. Among the group is Corey Conners (plus-1), who missed qualifying by one stroke.
