General Motors will receive investments from the federal and Ontario governments

The federal and Ontario governments are announcing investments of up to $259 million each in General Motors’ plant in Oshawa, Ontario, and its CAMI facility in Ingersoll, Ontario.

The government funding is part of a $2 billion investment from GM that will help boost production in Oshawa and support the company’s first electric vehicle production line.

Electric commercial vans known as BrightDrop, built at CAMI’s Ingersoll plant, are expected to begin production later this year.

The Ontario government has claimed it will be the first large-scale electric vehicle production plant in Canada.

Ontario also pointed out that GM’s investment would add a third shift to Oshawa, with more production of Chevrolet Silverado light trucks.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the investment was a vote of confidence by General Motors in Ontario and demonstrated that the automobiles of the future will be built in the province.
