General Motors wants to become an F1 engine manufacturer from 2028

The manufacturer General Motors (GM) has registered with the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to be an engine supplier in Formula 1 from 2028, the American giant announced on Tuesday, offering support to Andretti’s candidacy to join the F1 grid.

The American automobile team Andretti Global announced at the start of the year that it was joining forces with GM through Cadillac – one of GM’s brands – to try to enter the premier motorsport category in the coming years. But nothing had been said about the engine.

From the 2028 season, “our new Andretti Cadillac F1 team will be powered by a GM engine,” announced Mark Reuss, president of GM, quoted in a press release.

“With our engineering and racing expertise, we are confident that we will develop a successful powertrain for the series and position Andretti Cadillac as a true team,” he continued.

According to the group, development and testing of the prototype technology is already underway.

For its part, the FIA, through its president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, said it was “delighted to learn that GM has registered as a power unit supplier”. “The presence of the iconic American brands Andretti and GM is a good thing for the sport,” the Emirati wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

This announcement comes just over a month after the FIA gave the green light to Andretti Cadillac to become the 11e Formula 1 team.

The team, whose candidacy is supported by Michael Andretti, former F1 driver and son of Mario Andretti, F1 world champion in 1978, is now awaiting approval from the FOM, holder of the commercial rights to F1, to join the grid from 2025.

But the teams currently present in this discipline are reluctant because of the financial impact that the presence of new teams would have on the distribution of profits generated by F1.

According to the specialized site Autosport, representatives of GM and Andretti will be present this weekend in Las Vegas, on the occasion of the penultimate round of the F1 season, to “put pressure on the FOM” in order to obtain an agreement.

If its application is accepted, however, it remains to be seen by whom Andretti Cadillac will be powered by 2028.
