The government funding is part of a $2 billion investment from GM that will help boost production in Oshawa and support the company’s first electric vehicle production line.

The electric commercial vans known as the BrightDrop, built at the CAMI plant in Ingersoll, are expected to begin production later this year.

The Ontario government has claimed it will be the first large-scale electric vehicle production plant in Canada.

Ontario also pointed out that GM’s investment would add a third shift to Oshawa, with more production of Chevy Silverado light trucks.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the investment was a vote of confidence by General Motors in Ontario and demonstrated that the automobiles of the future will be built in the province.
