General Motors | Corvette on its way to becoming an electric sub-brand

While its electrification plan is well on track, General Motors (GM) plans to make Corvette a new electric sub-brand from 2025. At least that’s what the American magazine says. Car and Driver which is based on the words of a source working for the American manufacturer.

Like Ford with its Mustang, available as both a coupe and an electric crossover, the main purpose of the project is to take advantage of the notoriety of a model to boost the sale of electric vehicles. We already know since April that an electric Corvette is officially in the works. The latter will be complemented by a sports crossover and a sedan-coupé, according to Car and Driver. The Bloomberg agency also mentioned last year the existence of an electric Corvette crossover in development.

The new information obtained suggests a technology showcase mandate in all-electric. Corvette would thus benefit from the very latest advances in this area made by GM: electric motors that revolutionize at higher speeds, two-speed transmission, batteries with greater energy density, adjustable steering wheels, etc. At first glance, the American giant therefore wants to avoid the trap of “rebadging”, this strategy allowing the decline at low cost of many models which essentially share the same components and which stand out only by their presentation.

If this ambitious strategy really sees the light of day, Corvette will enter head-on in competition with Porsche, which also has its eyes riveted on the electrification of its range. History repeats itself, in short.
