Gender diversity: 1 in 200 young Quebecers is transgender or non-binary

A little more than one young Quebecer in 200 was transgender or non-binary in 2021, notes the Institute of Statistics of Quebec.

This is what the indicators from the Statistical Showcase on Youth reveal. “According to the population census, 10,155 young people aged 15 to 34 were transgender or non-binary in Quebec in 2021, or approximately 1 in 200 young people,” it is indicated in this document.

More specifically, 5,230 young people were “transgender,” meaning their gender does not match their biological sex, and 4,925 were of a gender that is “not exclusively male or female.”

“This includes people whose declared gender is agender, pangender, queer, fluid, non-conforming or even two-spirit, a term specific to certain indigenous peoples of North America,” specify the authors of the statistical showcase.

These are considerable numbers, since those aged 15 to 34, or 28% of the general population, represent 63% of the transgender or non-binary population, while only 6,070 people aged 35 and over are part of it.

The data also shows an interesting difference between younger and older trans people. While more men are transitioning to become women among those aged 35 and older (61%), more women are transitioning to men among those aged 15 to 34 (55%).
