Gendarmerie: training elite dogs

(France 2)

After the discovery of the bones of little Émile on March 30, excavations resumed in the field. In these searches, the police are supported by elite dogs. In 2015, France Télévisions was able to follow training led by the national dog training center in Gramat, in the Lot.

In 2015, in Gramat (Lot), a gendarmerie dog was in training. The objective for this Saint-Hubert was to find a young six-year-old boy who had disappeared a few hours earlier. The operation was fictitious. It was led by the VSbetween Gramat’s National Dog Training Centre. A unique center of its kind, which trains dogs to intervene in France and abroad.

550 dogs in the dog brigade

The Saint-Hubert, which has a sense of smell 60 times more developed than that of a human, is regularly used for tracking and research missions. A Malinois named “Houston” is, on the other hand, capable of remembering odors for 48 hours depending on location and temperature, but also of traveling several kilometers to find a missing person. The dog brigade today has 480 handlers and 550 dogs. Since 2002, it has had a specific unit intended for delicate criminal procedures.
