The motorist suspected of fatally knocking down a police officer on Monday 26 August in Mougins (Alpes-Maritimes) was charged with murder of a person in authority and placed in custody on Wednesday, announced the Grasse prosecutor’s office.

The suspect said he had it “hit unintentionally and, in a panic, left the scene” of the drama, a slip road of the A8 motorway in the commune of Mougins.

On Tuesday, the Grasse prosecutor’s office indicated that the suspect, aged 39, had ten convictions on his criminal record for “traffic violations” but also “attacks on people”. After his arrest in Cannes, on the night of Monday to Tuesday, the reckless driver tested positive for alcohol.

“France killed my husband” by his “excess of tolerance”had accused earlier Tuesday the widow of the slain gendarme, during a ceremony in tribute to her husband in Mandelieu-La Napoule, the town where the motorized platoon to which he belonged was based.
