Louise Bichet, head of the Middle East division at Médecins du Monde, being the guest of 12/13 info, Wednesday November 29. She largely returned to the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
On Wednesday, November 29, Gazans were ordered not to go to the north of the Palestinian enclave. It is considered a war zone by the Israeli army. “There are still no truly safe places in the Gaza Strip. (…) Even if the few days of truce are good for our team which is still inside”, says Louise Bichet, head of the Middle East division at Médecins du Monde. On site, representatives of the NGO resumed “a form of work”.
Towards a ceasefire?
Louise Bichet explains that Gazans live “in shelters for over a month“and they need”find their home“, when possible. For the representative of Médecins du Monde, these “movements“of population”must be permitted“, because “It’s part of the deal in theory.“.
At the request of the United States in particular, the truce could be extended until Sunday. Is it sufficient ? “No ! The request that Médecins du Monde makes (…) is that France and other countries that can put pressure on Israel agree and speak with a common voice for a real ceasefire.”, replies Louise Bichet. According to her, stopping the fighting is “essential for the protection of civilian populations, hospitals, health personnel“.
