Gatineau | Two deaths and one arrest after leaving the road

(Gatineau) Two people died in a road accident in the Buckingham sector, in Gatineau, early Sunday morning.

A vehicle apparently left the road, then collided with Hydro-Québec poles, before catching fire, at the intersection of Buckingham Avenue and Maclaren Street, around 3 a.m.

When the police arrived on the scene, they noted the death of two passengers inside the vehicle, said Officer Patrick Kenney of the City of Gatineau Police Department.

Although the investigation is still ongoing at midday, initial information suggests that only three people are involved, including the two victims.

The driver was arrested by the police following information gathered at the scene.

No details were available on the identity of the victims and the person arrested.

Agent Kenney specifies that investigators are meeting with witnesses to clarify the circumstances of the event.

The establishment of a security perimeter led to the closure of the intersection, namely Buckingham Avenue, between Lamennais and Joseph streets, as well as Maclaren Street, between Charles and Georges streets. This corresponds to the bridge which connects the two parts of Buckingham, crossed by the Lièvre river.
