Gatherings prohibited in the city center of Montpellier for the night of New Year’s Eve

A new health defense council is scheduled for Monday to consider new measures to fight the Covid-19 epidemic. We are talking in particular of a possible curfew for the night of New Year’s Eve, but nothing has been decided yet.

Even before the announcement of these measures, the prefect of Hérault issued an order to ban gatherings and the consumption of food and alcohol in several areas of downtown Montpellier.

The specific circumstances related to the risk of disturbing public order on the occasion of the New Year’s Day and, at the same time, the deterioration of the health situation in the department led the prefect of Hérault, Hugues Moutouh, to take administrative police measures.“specifies the prefecture in a press release on Monday morning

Public and festive gatherings should be limited due to the epidemiological situation. The police will be particularly mobilized to prevent gatherings on the public highway which would be incompatible with health recommendations and likely to generate unrest. “

A prefectural decree prohibits the consumption of alcohol and restaurants on public roads in Montpellier, on Friday December 31, 2021 and on Saturday January 1, 2022, in the following places:

Place de la Comédie and Esplanade Charles de Gaulle
Place Jean Jaurès
Flower Market Square
Place des Martyrs de la Resistance
Place de la Canourgue
Place Saint-Roch
Europe Square

In addition, as every year, buying, selling and using firecrackers (all categories) and fireworks are prohibited, as are the purchase, sale and transport of acid, jerrycan fuel, household alcohol and any flammable or chemical products. Professionals justifying an activity requiring the use of these consumables are excluded from the measure.
