“Garden”, MUNYA | The duty

By revealing last summer One two threethe first extract from his new album Garden, MUNYA (Montrealer Josie Boivin) said she wanted to pay tribute to disco house pioneer Giorgio Moroder and his friends Daft Punk, whose separation two years ago “devastated” her. Known for her bilingual retro pop song yé-yé, MUNYA is now tiptoeing onto the dance floor with this third album with bouncier rhythms than before. The instrumental Hello Hi in the opening hesitates between house and hip-hop, the extract Sweetie has the sweet look of a funk drawn towards disco, like the excellent Once Again, on which we hear his American collaborator and co-director Kainalu singing. The orchestrations may well be more electronic and seasoned with R&B than before, but Josie Boivin still retains this attachment to the pop songs of the 1960s by Françoise Hardy and Anna Karina, which is reflected in Sleepless night in opening, in the flow Nelly and in the ballad transfixed with love, Koko.
