The second round of Wimbledon began on Wednesday June 29 on the London lawn. Scheduled for the opening on the Center Court, Novak Djokovic unrolled his tennis to qualify, while the Frenchman Ugo Humbert brought down Casper Rudd, sixth player in the world. Great performance also from Caroline Garcia, in a state of grace against the Briton Emma Raducanu. On the other hand, the seeded n°2 of the women’s tournament, Anett Kontaveit, has already taken the door.
Novak Djokovic goes on easily, Carlos Alcaraz without shaking, Andy Murray on the sidelines
Unlike his first round against the Korean Soon-woo Kwon, Novak Djokovic did not leave any sets on the way this time. Opposed to the Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis (79th in the world), the Serb played solidly to win easily in three sets (6-1, 6-4, 6-2) and 2h03 of play.
Dominating on his service, the seeded No. 1 had only one break point to discard. “The wind made the service complicated, but I put in a very high quality performance”, he rejoiced after his victory. Under these conditions, it is difficult for the Australian to compete a little bit with the triple title holder (and six victories in total). In his quest for a 21st Grand Slam crown, Novak Djokovic will be opposed in the third round to his compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic (30th).
A little later, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz made short work of Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor. In two sets, the Iberian nugget unrolled even if he was hung in the second set (6-4, 7-6 [7-0], 6-3). He will face Germany’s Oscar Otte in the next round. Andy Murray fought well against the giant John Isner but, despite a central court won over to his cause, the British darling had to give in to the colossus of North Carolina (6-4, 7-6 [7-4]6-7 [3-7], 6-4). It is the first time that Murray has lost in the second round of Wimbledon after thirteen successes at this stage of the English Grand Slam.

Humbert regains color by dismissing Ruud
The Messin seems to be back. Former 25th player in the world (in June 2021), down to 112th place, Ugo Humbert disposed of recent Roland-Garros finalist Casper Ruud in four sets (3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4) . The left-hander has found the keys to prevent the Norwegian, not necessarily a great specialist on grass, from developing his game. By having the sixth in the ATP ranking, Humbert continues his good series against players from the top 10, with a record of seven wins for five losses.
Oh the beautiful performance of @HumbertUgo ! Faller of Casper Ruud (N°6), the Frenchman…

After months of difficulty, due in particular to a long Covid-19, the Frenchman joins the third round of Wimbledon, his best Grand Slam result since his round of 16 on English grass in 2019. He will face the Belgian David Goffin .
On the other hand, for Adrian Mannarino and Quentin Halys, Wimbledon is now a thing of the past. The first of them did not necessarily exist against the American Tommy Paul and was beaten in three sets (6-2, 6-4, 6-1). On the other hand, Halys battled against Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili for four sets (7-6, 6-0, 7-5, 7-6), but had to bow to his opponent’s experience.
Caroline Garcia treats against Emma Raducanu, Diane Parry awaits Ons Jabeur
She was unplayable. From the first to the last point, Caroline Garcia took the measure of her opponent of the day, the new British tennis star, Emma Raducanu, 11th in the world, in two short sets (6-3, 6-3). If she could have been worried in the middle of the second round after having been broken by her opponent, the Lyonnaise ultimately never let herself be overtaken by events and by a public won over to the cause of Raducanu.
“It’s good when you have a string of victories! There was a title last week but here you have to start from scratch and I had to fight in the first round”, said Caroline Garcia on center court after her success. The tricolor player will face the Chinese Shuai Zhang in the next round, to try to join, as in 2018, the knockout stages of Wimbledon.

For her part, Diane Parry assumed her status as favorite against the Japanese Mai Hontama. The Frenchwoman, 77th in the world, disposed of her Japanese rival, 139 in the WTA rankings, in two sets and just over an hour and a half of play. She will have a lot to do in the next round because it is the Tunisian Ons Jabeur, second in the world and easy winner of her second round (6-4, 6-0) who will be on the other side of the court.
Anett Kontaveit already eliminated
Third player in the world and seeded No. 2 at Wimbledon, Anett Kontaveit will not go further than the second round. Already eliminated in the first round of Roland-Garros, the Estonian was dominated in the large widths by the German Jule Niemeier, yet 97th in the WTA rankings.

Anett Kontaveit lost in two sets (6-4, 6-0), in 59 minutes, during a meeting where she did not get any break point. At 26, she will therefore not go beyond the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in her career. The table therefore opens a little more for the Tunisian Ons Jabeur, seeded n°3. For his part, Jule Niemeier will challenge the Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (101st) in the next round.
