The Plante administration said it was “extremely concerned” by the explosion in the cost of garbage collection on Wednesday, the day after the award of contracts much more expensive than expected.
Earlier this week, the city council had to grant mandates 60 to 80% more expensive than expected for pickup in Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Saint-Laurent and Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension. A series of contracts valued at 46 million will ultimately cost 83 million over the next five years.
“At this rate, it will no longer be possible to offer the same services to the people of Montreal while respecting taxpayers’ ability to pay,” warned the elected officials of a bipartisan committee that looked into these contracts.
On Wednesday, the number 2 of the Plante administration added his voice to these concerns.
“We understand that part of it is explained by the labor shortage, which is explained by inflation, by the rising cost of gasoline, but we are excessively concerned about see that we have such a leap, ”said the president of the executive committee Dominique Ollivier, at a press conference. “Yes, the costs have increased, but for the moment it does not yet endanger service delivery. »
Mme Ollivier mentioned the fact that “there are not a lot of players on the pitch” to explain this situation.
