Gang-linked man to serve sentence in community

A man associated with a Laval street gang will serve his sentence at home in a firearm possession case after spending more than two years behind bars in connection with a shooting that occurred in 2021 at Galeries Normandies in Montreal.

Emmanuel Love Luberisse, considered by the authorities as a member of 24 gang, a criminal group in the Saint-François sector in Laval, was sentenced to 47 months in prison. Judge Jean-Jacques Gagné endorsed this joint suggestion Friday afternoon at the Montreal courthouse.

The 31-year-old man, however, left the courthouse shortly after his hearing, given the pre-trial detention carried out since November 2021 for his participation in a shooting that occurred in a shopping center in Ahuntsic-Cartierville

Emmanuel Love Luberisse also pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm. Police seized the handgun during his arrest. He will therefore serve an 18-month sentence in the community, confined to a single address.

He will have to respect a curfew and will be prohibited from communicating with street gang members or people with criminal records.

“Mr. Luberisse paid extremely dearly for his bad company […] He wants to get out of this environment,” his lawyer, M.e Danièle Roy.

“It’s more than just bad company,” Judge Gagné emphasized in the courtroom.

The Laval police street gang expert, Karine Tétreault, detailed in her testimony the long-standing bloody rivalry between the 24 gangs and the 2DIE4, two Laval street gangs.

The shooting at Galeries Normandies occurred in broad daylight in the parking lot of a crowded shopping center. A young man chased by a shooter was targeted by six gunshots, while a restaurant employee narrowly escaped the bullets.

Emmanuel Love Luberisse, Rodolph Surin and his brother Jean Rhodny Surin were then suspected of being the shooter’s accomplices. Brothers Rodolphe and Jean-Rodhny Surin were ultimately acquitted. Luberisse was acquitted of attempted murder, but found guilty of discharging a firearm.

It’s Me Émilie Robert who represented the public prosecutor in this case.
