Considered one of the most influential gang leaders in Haiti, former police officer Jimmy Chérizier has warned of a “civil war” if Prime Minister Ariel Henry remains in power.
Haiti’s new strongman, nicknamed “Barbecue”, one of the country’s main criminal leaders, wants to overthrow the government. The threat was made on Tuesday March 5. The influential Haitian gang leader assured that a “civil war” would take place if the contested Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, did not resign. Absent for several days from Haiti after a trip to Kenya, the Prime Minister landed Tuesday March 5 in Puerto Rico, having been unable to land in the capital Port-au-Prince due to the security situation at the airport.
UN alert
Criminal gangs, who control the majority of the capital Port-au-Prince as well as the roads leading to the rest of the territory, have attacked strategic sites in the country in recent days. The UN is sounding the alarm and requesting the deployment of the multinational security support mission in Haiti. In two months, nearly 1,200 people have been killed in the country due to gang violence.
