Quebecer Gabriel Diallo lost in the first round of the Newport tournament on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old fell in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 against South African Kevin Anderson. The veteran won in 54 minutes.
At 37, Anderson is making a return to competition in Newport. He had retired from professional tennis in March 2022, after the Miami Masters 1000.
Whoever received an invitation to the event held in Rhode Island won with the balls in hand. He had 11 aces and won 88% of rallies played on his first serve. He also broke the Montreal native five times.
For his part, Diallo was not able to take advantage of the only break point he had offered himself. He also had difficulty on serve, he who only managed 53% of his first face-off attempts.
In the second round, Anderson has an appointment with the Dutchman Gijs Brouwer. The latter defeated the sixth seed of this competition, the Australian Max Purcell.
