Six months and seven days at the head of the government. Gabriel Attal is the second shortest-lived Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic, after Bernard Cazeneuve. Now resigned, this represents a new stage for the Parisian MP who is preparing for the future, and is seeking, for that, to make good on his departure from the rue de Varenne.
Gabriel Attal is the youngest Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic, but he is not the only one to be remembered for. The head of government is refining the story of his last day at Matignon. “His exit must be done properly, and his record must be recalled,” assures his entourage, even if it means putting it on show. According to information from franceinfo, his team is preparing a “large summary table” with all of his action which will be distributed at the time of his departure.
In this table, we will find agriculture, with the crisis he experienced upon his arrival, health, social affairs, youth, authority with his speech at Viry-Châtillon… A way of trying to make people forget the absence of major structural reform during his mandate.
The resigning Prime Minister is thinking about his second role, that of leader of the first group of the presidential camp in the National Assembly, Together for the Republic. This is a key position in this Bourbon palace that has become the epicentre of political life since the dissolution. And Gabriel Attal aims to gain weight there. Hence the idea of overplaying the break with the head of state, of showing that he is emancipating himself.
He thus counts, as one of his close friends says, “reunify” the troops, who are angry with Emmanuel Macron, traumatized by these last months. The head of government remained in contact with these deputies this summer to build what he calls “an action pact for the French”a working basis for seeking compromises.
There is the next move, in November, the date envisaged for organizing the election at the head of the Renaissance party. Will Gabriel Attal be a candidate? “He doesn’t rule it out.”assures his entourage to franceinfo. The head of the party, these are the keys to the truck, the budget, the activists, the elected officials, the anchoring… This represents a stepping stone for the future, that is to say 2027 and the presidential election. “Nobody is fooled, he considers it,” confides the same source. But there remains the same major obstacle for all those who hope to get started: the long and winding path that leads to the election.
