He wants to calm concerns. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal assured in an interview with Worldpublished Friday April 5, that “individuals will not be affected” through the taxation of “rents” which he himself announced. A working group of parliamentarians from the majority must present proposals on this subject by June, after the deficit deteriorates to 5.5% of GDP in 2023.

The head of government affirmed that it was a question of taxing “rents from situation (…) of companies which make profits through inflation”targeting in particular energy companies. “We will have to look if there are other sectors which are concerned”he also assured.

Among the other avenues considered, the taxation of “operations such as share buybacks carried out by large groups which, rather than investing and better remunerating their employees, buy back their own shares to increase their price”. A measure already mentioned by Emmanuel Macron in March 2023, but which never saw the light of day.
