Failing to have a head of list for the European elections, the government was able to see the Prime Minister step up against the RN, during his speech on Tuesday January 30, before the National Assembly. These elections are scheduled for June 9 and just over four months before the election, the Macronist list is 10 points behind Jordan Bardella in the polls.
At the end of his general policy statement, Gabriel Attal almost went on the campaign trail. He accused Marine Le Pen’s party of advocating a “Frexit in disguise”targeting RN towns which have renamed streets “Brexit Street”, in this case Beaucaire, in the Gard. Gabriel Attal also said that “Europe is the eternal scapegoat of those who, unable to lead a country, want to destroy a continent”. The Prime Minister even returned to the charge after listening to the oppositions’ speeches. He denounced “absolute inconsistencies” from the RN to the European Parliament, “to wonder if your MEPs know what they are voting for”, he worried. These words, however, did not impress the National Rally: “If that’s the campaign’s arguments, we’re saved”sweeps away a lieutenant of Marine Le Pen.
Mission Jordan Bardella
Gabriel Attal targeting the National Rally is no surprise. The presidential majority had theorized the remote duel between the Prime Minister and Jordan Bardella. Gabriel Attal’s mission is to “put the RN back in place”, explains a Renaissance framework. “We will not give up anything to the RN during the campaign and Attal will have an essential role for that”, insists another.
The Macronists’ strategy must be played out on three levels: Emmanuel Macron manages the major international issues, the Prime Minister devotes himself to the national arena, and the head of the future list will take care of the field and the battle of mobilization. This head of the list is expected by mid-February, but we must first complete the government, it’s a matter of days now. Then you will need a candidate. Emmanuel Macron dreams of convincing former minister Julien Denormandie, or the new boss of the Renew group in the European Parliament, Valérie Hayer. The name of the former Minister of Industry, Roland Lescure, is also circulating. In any case, the model of the campaign posters is ready, with the slogan “Need for Europe”. It’s just missing the headliner.
