G7 pledges to ‘ban or phase out’ Russian oil purchases, White House announces

The White House announced Sunday, May 8, in a press release, that “the whole G7” is silentcommitted today to banning or phasing out imports of Russian oil”.

This decision “will deal a blow to the main artery irrigating the economy of (Vladimir) Putin and deprive him of the income he needs to finance his war”affirms the American executive, without specifying which commitments exactly made each of the members of the G7, namely Germany (which has the presidency this year), Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan, and the UK.

The United States, which were not big consumers, have already banned the import of Russian hydrocarbons.

As Vladimir Putin prepares to celebrate the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany on Monday, his actions in Ukraine “cover Russia and the historic sacrifices of its people with shame”according to the G7.

In a virtual meeting attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Heads of State and Government of Germany, Canada, United States, France, Italy, Japan, and from the United Kingdom “repeated (their) commitment to take further steps to help Ukraine secure a free and democratic future” as well as “defend and repel future acts of aggression”according to the text published at the end of the meeting.
