Funeral of Elizabeth II: This only member of the royal family who was not present

The funeral of Elizabeth II is already considered the funeral of the century. This Monday, September 19, 2022, the world came together as the queen was about to be buried. We were able to count the presence of almost all the heads of state on the planet, including Emmanuel Macron, but also some thirty European royal families, as well as of course the royal family reunited as a whole for a final farewell to Her Majesty. But a member of the royal family was missing in Westminster Abbey, then at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, where an intimate ceremony took place.

Indeed, according to Hello!, Katharine, Duchess of Kent was not present. She is the wife of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, first cousin of the late monarch. If the Duchess of Kent did not make the trip, her husband was present for this unforgettable and very moving funeral. The 89-year-old stepped down from royal duties in 2022. She has since been seen very little in public, apart from a rare appearance last May, at Lancaster House in London for her charity, Future Talent. Her last appearance before that was in 2019. Our British colleagues do not reveal the reason for her absence at the funeral of Elizabeth II. However, they recall that she suffered from health problems in the past, including ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis, also known as “chronic fatigue syndrome”).

Who is Katharine, Duchess of Kent?

Katharine Lucy Mary Worsley is the fourth child and only daughter of Sir William Worsley and his wife Joyce Morgan Brunner. She met the Duke of Kent when she was 24 when Edward was living at Catterick Camp, an English military base. The couple married in 1961 and share three children, Lord Nicholas Windsor, Lady Helen Taylor and George, Earl of St Andrews, and ten grandchildren. For 13 years, she held a job as a music teacher at Wansbeck Primary School in Hull, having carried out his royal duties, as entrusted by the principal concerned with The Telegraph. “I was just known as Mrs. Kentshe said. Only the director knew who I was. The parents didn’t know it and the students didn’t know it. Nobody ever noticed it. There were no ads for it – it just seemed to work.”
