Fund financed with cannabis profits | Quebec promises “detailed accountability”

(Quebec) At the request of the opposition, the Legault government agrees to soon present a “detailed report” on the measures financed by the Cannabis Prevention and Research Fund.

The Press revealed this week that a large part of the cannabis profits that are paid into this Fund are spent for purposes other than those provided for by law. We added that accountability is lacking.

At the Salon Bleu on Wednesday, Liberal MP Elisabeth Prass presented a motion to correct the situation. The Legault government gave the green light. The National Assembly adopted the motion unanimously.

According to this motion, “the National Assembly requires the CAQ government to make public a detailed report on the measures, initiatives and projects financed via the Cannabis Prevention and Research Fund, by “study of 2024-2025 budgetary appropriations” planned for this spring.

It is recalled that “the Cannabis Prevention and Research Fund is allocated to financing surveillance and research activities and programs concerning the effects of cannabis on the state of the population, curative care linked to the “use of cannabis and activities and programs for the prevention of cannabis harms and health promotion”.

Gold The Press found that the Department of Health and Social Services, which administers this Fund, has also financed a host of activities that do not have a direct link to cannabis, such as housing for the homeless, amateur sports , quality of life in neighborhoods, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Quebec Tobacco Council, among others.
