Despite the inflationary context, French fruits and vegetables are resisting inflation, a boon for consumers. For their part, producers are forced to cut back on margins.

On market stalls, seasonal varieties are holding their own against inflation. Compared to 2022, the prices of French fruit and vegetables have not changed much. “There, they are rather at reasonable prices. It allows you to have fun”, assures a woman. In one year, the prices of certain French fruits and vegetables have even fallen. For example, the kilo of zucchini fell by 0.47 euro, for tomatoes – 0.27 euro. Prices were contained, in part, thanks to favorable weather.

Producers impacted by inflation

However, producers are also suffering from inflation. In recent months, Blanche Bosy, a farmer in Ille-et-Vilaine, has seen her charges jump. Only, it is impossible to pass on these increases to prices. “We must stay on prices, where we know that people will continue to consume. Otherwise, we stop. We put the key under the tarpaulin”, assures this producer. To keep its customers, in the face of French and foreign competition, Blanche Bosy had to cut corners on its margins and is being paid with difficulty.
