Fruits and vegetables have increased by 11% in one year according to the Association Familles Rurales, twice as much as inflation itself. Producers justify this increase by the increased costs they incur to heat their greenhouses, pay for fuel and labour.

This is one of the favorite purchases of the French during the summer: fruit and vegetables. But this year, consumers have to put their hands in their pockets to buy foods that have become particularly expensive. “What has increased the most is the salad, with 15 cents more compared to last year”explains Mickael Bourguignon, vegetable producer in Cailloux-sur-Fontaine (Rhône).

An increase that offends the associations. “In a healthy diet, the basis is fruit and vegetables, so the government must react. We cannot tolerate that we voted last night on a purchasing power bill which does not contain any measures to helping consumers to eat properly”says Nadia Ziane, director of consumption at Rural Families.
