How to organize level groups in middle school? From the next school year, 6th and 5th grade students will be distributed according to their skills for all maths and French lessons, with reduced numbers for those in greatest difficulty. When it was announced in early December, for “raise the general level“, Gabriel Attal promised, and against all expectations, additional professorships. The Minister of National Education returns to what was planned in the 2024 budget, a text that has already been voted on by the National Assembly and the Senate these last weeks.
Nearly 2,500 teaching positions were to disappear, linked to the demographic decline in the number of students. Change of course therefore: these deletions are canceled. In schools, three times fewer positions are being removed than expected.
Government backpedaling in middle and high schools
In middle and high schools, the government is completely backpedaling and no longer removes any at all. On the contrary, positions will be recreated, a first since 2017. In total, 830 positions will be marked for these famous level groups.
In addition, 1,500 teaching positions will be redeployed. These affected staff are those who managed this year, the weekly support hour for 6th graders in maths and French. This time disappears, since these two disciplines will now be taught precisely by level. These additional teachers will make it possible to create groups of 15 students maximum, for those in greatest difficulty.
