Arriving the day before in Lebanon, the new French Minister of Foreign Affairs spoke on Monday September 30 on the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. HASFollowing the intensification of Israeli strikes targeting the Lebanese pro-Iranian movement Hezbollah, Jean-Noël Barrot called on Israel to “refrain from any land incursion” in Lebanon, during a press conference. “I call on Hezbollah to do the same and to refrain from any action likely to destabilize the region”continued the head of diplomacy.
Jean-Noël Barrot thus urged “the parts” has “grab now” the international ceasefire proposal launched at the UN. “It’s still on the table. There is still hope, but there is little time left“, he warned.
Paris and Washington, joined by Arab, Western and European countries, called last week for a “immediate 21-day ceasefire” between Israel and the Shiite organization supported by Iran, in order to “give diplomacy a chance”. An initiative ignored by Israel, which intensified its strikes on Lebanon, killing the leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, in one of them on Friday.
More than 1,000 people have been killed in Lebanon, according to Lebanese authorities, since the military escalation between Israel and Hezbollah began in mid-September.
