Two Brady Tkachuk goals help Senators beat Maple Leafs 6-2
Brady Tkachuk scored two goals, goaltender Anton Forsberg saved 31 pucks and the Ottawa Senators defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2 on Friday night.
Claude Giroux, Thomas Chabot, Drake Batherson and Derick Brassard were the other Senators scorers (22-23-30), winning at Scotiabank Arena with spectators in the stands for the first time since October 2018.
Giroux added an assist and Tim Stützle had two assists.
William Nylander and Joey Anderson provided the counterpart for the Maple Leafs (30-12-8), who played the game in the absence of Auston Matthews, victim of a sprained knee that will keep him away from the game for at least three weeks.
Matthews was injured in his team’s win over the New York Rangers on Wednesday night in overtime.
Goalkeeper Ilya Samsonov, who was due to enjoy a night off, was sent into the fray and blocked 28 shots. Matt Murray was scheduled to play his first game since Jan. 17 in net for the Maple Leafs, but it appears he was injured by a shot from Nylander during warmup.
The Maple Leafs’ loss was only their fourth at home, in regulation, since the start of the 2022-23 season.
The score was 2-2 midway through the middle frame when the Senators took the lead for the third time in the game.
With his back to the Maple Leafs goaltender on a power play, Brassard attempted to spin the puck across the front of the net, but the puck deflected off defenseman Timothy Liljegren’s stick and slid into the net. It was his seventh goal of the season.
Batherson made it 4-2 with his 15e of the campaign, at 16:37 of the second period.
