Mason Appleton scored the only goal for the Jets (35-23-1).

Connor Hellebuyck stopped 21 of the 26 shots he faced before being replaced by David Rittich to start the third period. Rittich made 10 saves.

The Avalanche led 4-1 after the first period and 5-1 after the second.

MacKinnon opened the scoring for the Avalanche 19 seconds into the game by scoring his 20e goal of the season in a breakaway.

William Nylander scored 1:05 into overtime to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Friday night.

David Kampf scored the other goal for the Maple Leafs (36-15-8). Ilya Samsonov made 24 saves. Nylander added an assist to give him 70 points this season.

Brandon Duhaime replied for the Wild (32-21-6). Filip Gustavsson stopped 22 shots as the Wild saw their four-game winning streak come to an end after beating the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-0 on Thursday.

The Wild opened the scoring in the first period on a bizarre streak that saw Duhaime’s pass ricochet off the skate of Calle Jarnkrok of the Leafs, ultimately trumping Samsonov.

The Leafs responded before the end of the period when Kampf scored his sixth goal after a Nylander pass behind the net.

Nylander stole the puck from Frédérick Gaudreau before deceiving Gustavsson to score the winning goal in overtime.
