Bruins win 3-2 against Hurricanes

The Boston Bruins set a National Hockey League record by signing a 12e consecutive home win to open a season on Friday with a 3-2 overtime win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

David Pastrnak scored the decisive net on the power play.

The Chicago Black Hawks, 1963-64, and the Florida Panthers, last season, had established the old mark of 11 straight wins at the start of the campaign.

The Bruins, who were down 2-0 late in the second period, tied the game with 9:33 left in regulation when David Krejci scored his second goal of the game with a shot from the right point.

The goal was originally disallowed for goalie interference by Nick Foligno. A video challenge helped overturn the decision in favor of the Bruins when it was determined that Foligno was pushed into the goaltender’s half circle by defenseman Brett Pesce.

Krejci had scored the Bruins’ first goal with 31 seconds left in the middle frame.

In overtime, the Hurricanes found themselves shorthanded after being caught with an extra player on the ice.

The Bruins didn’t let the opportunity slip away, Pastrnak hitting the target with a one-timer from outside the left face-off circle following a pass from Brad Marchand.

Stefan Noesen and Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored power-play goals for the Hurricanes, who suffered a fifth straight loss. Goalkeeper Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 38 shots.

Linus Ullmark started the game in goal for the Bruins and made 28 saves. However, he had to leave with 13:03 left in the third period due to an unspecified upper body injury. Jeremy Swayman blocked six shots in relief.

Alex Ovechkin and TJ Oshie both had a goal and an assist to guide the Washington Capitals to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday.

Ovechkin scored his 791e career NHL goal on a power play, 12:24 into the third period. He eluded the vigilance of Jacob Markstrom with a quick wrist shot to make it 3-0.

The 37-year-old winger is just 11 goals from edging the legendary Gordie Howe for second most in NHL history.

Oshie opened the scoring in the first period, marking the first time since Nov. 11 that the Capitals scored the first goal of a game. Oshie has four points in two games since returning from a lower-body injury that caused him to miss 11 games.

Evgeny Kuznetsov completed the scoring for the Capitals. Darcy Kuemper was perfect in front of 32 shots.

Markstrom finished the matchup with 22 saves for the Flames.
